I can’t tell you which mattress to buy for your posture. Only your doctor can tell you if you need a specific mattress. Other than that, it comes down to YOU… not your mattress salesman or an in-house mattress store “doctor.”
That said, I can give you some ideas on how to choose the right mattress to improve your posture and back pain.
Strike a Balance to Your Mattress
When you’re looking to help out your back with a proper mattress, it is important to find one that is not only comfortable, but also provides support to your back and the natural curve of your spine. This means a soft mattress might not be best for you.
Again, it’s up to you to decide. I did find this graph from Sleep Like the Dead that demonstrates how the firmness of your mattress can affect back pain. As you can see, medium level firmness is the most likely to alleviate, and prevent, back pain.
Firmness gives you the support, but you need to be comfortable. That’s why medium is so popular. It strikes a balance.
Get an Update to Your Mattress
One more graph from Sleep Like the Dead shows how a saggy, old mattress contributes to back pain.
You may have found the perfect mattress, but if that was 6 years ago… it might be time for an upgrade. If you find that your back pain has increased lately, check your mattress to see if it is sagging.
Even a firm mattress will become soft with time, so make sure to keep that in mind. Rotating your mattress regularly will help slow this process.
Straight from the Docs About Your Mattress
At Resurgens Spine Center’s website, there is some great information about finding the best mattress. However, “… there are no good medical studies to document what brand of mattress results in better sleep and less back problems.”
Really, if anyone tells you otherwise, you have the proof here. There are no specific brands that will help your back. Only you can decide which mattress is the best one for you.
Long Story Short About Your Mattress
Relieving back pain will improve your posture. We spend ⅓ of our lives on our mattresses, so anything we can do to support our backs during that time will help!
The best thing you can do right now is come in and try out a few mattresses.
