Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus – Mattress Edition

I’ve always said I can’t find the right mattress for you. You have to make that choice. Still, I can give you some ideas to help guide that decision.

Men and women tend to have different issues and needs when it comes to their mattress.

Typically, men have problems with their mid to lower back.Women, on the other hand, have pain issues with their hips and shoulders.

Why is This?

It is likely because of their sleep positions, body shapes, and the quality of their mattress.

Side-Sleepers Unite! (And beware)

Most experts say that side sleeping is the best to combat back pain and other health issues. The problem is that there are quite a few ways to mess it up, from pillows to arm placement. (By the end of this, you’ll probably realize that you need a few more pillows.)

The pillow you rest your head on needs to fill up the gap created between your head and shoulders so that you are getting enough support.

You should also put a pillow between your knees to prevent your top leg from pulling and straining your hips and low back. Think about it – when you are standing “hip-width apart,” your knees aren’t touching. So why should they when you’re sleeping?

Also, many people tuck their arm up under their heads when they sleep on their side.

Don’t do it!

When your arm is under your pillow, it also under a 10-pound weight – a.k.a. your head! This can cause poor circulation and pain.

Instead, start by stretching your arm out in front of you. Then, bring it back into your chest and hug a pillow between your arms.

If you have experienced shoulder and hip pain from side-sleeping, change things up. Sleep on your other side to alleviate the pressure from your tender side. Employ your new pillow knowledge and keep your arms in their optimal position.

What if Both Sides Hurt?

It might be time to start sleeping on your back, for a little while at least. In this position, you may find that you need to slip a pillow under your knees to keep them supported. Whatever you do, try to avoid sleeping on your stomach!

Okay, so a mattress for everyone doesn’t really exist. We all have different needs so we all gravitate towards different mattress types. So, what do you do when you and your partner have different needs?

Well, you can always make a bed softer but you can’t make it harder.

I recommend that you find a mattress that is firm enough for the hard-bed lover – typically the male. For the person who needs a softer mattress, slip a piece of foam under the sheets. That way you’ll get the best of both worlds!
